District Six Semi-Formal

District Six’s Semi-Formal is largely an event for members of Filipino organizations from various universities in the DMV area to meet and socialize. It is also a way for a school’s members to go out and have fun at an event together.

Semi starts with an introduction to District Six, explaining what the organization is, to those new to the organization and to formally introduce District Six’s executive board for the year. Soon after introductions, a dinner is served. Following that, a series of choreographed dances prepared by each D6 member school are performed in front of the remaining District Six general body (aka students from other universities) . Each dance is unique and can consist of a modern piece where a stunning hip hop dance put the crowd in awe or a cultural piece where a folk dance reminds the crowd of their roots. After all the organized dancing and events of the evening are finished, the dance floor is open to all guests of the evening, and it allows for an opportunity for members of District Six to get to converse with each other whether they are from the same school or another school.

More or less, Semi is a way to renew comradery among the schools because in most cases, college students are busy and do not have time to go to another school to connect with other individuals. The main goal of District Six is to give the opportunity for students to network with people in other schools and grow professionally. Semi gives District Six members the opportunity to connect with other people in a formal setting, while still giving a relaxed atmosphere for the individual. The event itself is very fun because it gives the student the opportunity to connect with other people that are not from the same school as themselves even if they don’t have a similar major. The event can also be used for refine the student’s social skills especially when it comes to meeting new people and even getting over some anxieties. It is more than an event where college students can socialize but also a chance to have new experiences, meeting new people.
PCS Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is about family and being thankful for all the things in our lives. It’s really one of the best holidays. PCS’s Thanksgiving dinner is a tradition that brings everyone together and lets us appreciate the family we’re all a part of. There’s no better time to get all of us in one place just to hang out, eat, and enjoy seeing one another.

One of my favorite parts is cooking together in bahays. It’s a chance to get to know everyone better, get closer to the people you already know, and have fun trying to make all this food. For example, last year there was a sort of meatball situation where Ren and I thought there was an unusual amount of liquid in the meat, so we facetimed another bahay to ask them if it was normal and they were shocked to find us literally squeezing out the liquid! It’s something we’ve laughed about many times since. It’s just a great day full of laughter and friendship and, amidst all the tests and projects, it really is important to find the time to relax and be with friends.

The dinner is exciting because a lot of alumni make an appearance. PCS has such great alumni, many of whom stay active and come out to events like this one. It’s basically the first event of the year where new members get to meet these alumni and it makes you realize that the friendships you make in this org really last a lifetime. Also, during the dinner, people get a chance to come up and say what it is they’re thankful for. I love hearing everyone share and it makes me so happy to know there’s so much to be thankful for.
Overall, it’s a really fun day and such a warm and cozy evening of friends and food. This year we’re hosting the event in the Alumni House on Saturday, November 19 at 6:30 pm. Hope to see you there!
